If you've hung out with us here at SSH for more than 10 minutes, then you've heard us talk about how brilliant our dogs are! They make us look good (well, or not if we haven't trained them) Mini & Toy Australian Shepherds are known for their intelligence, energy, and eagerness to learn. Even though physical exercise is essential for keeping your Aussie happy, mental stimulation is just as important (especially for a breed that thrives on a challenge and purpose). Think of it as the difference between recess and organized sports or even math class. Both make us tired, but in different ways. Without mental stimulation, your Aussies become bored, anxious, and worst of all, mischievous (hello, chewed shoes and new backyard holes!)
Australian Shepherd mental stimulation not only keeps your Aussie entertained but also helps them build confidence, strengthen your bond, and positively fulfill their working-dog instincts. At SSH Aussies, we have come up with a list of what we think are the best brain-stimulating activities to add to your daily routine easily.
Brain Games for Mini & Toy Australian Shepherds
Mental Stimulation through Puzzle Toys, Food Dispensing Games, & Interactive Feedings
Puzzle toys, food-dispensing games, and interactive feeding times help Australian Shepherds with their problem-solving skills and desire to work for their rewards.

Puzzle Toy Options:
Level 1 Puzzles: simple treat-dispensing balls or snuffle mats
Intermediate Puzzles: includes sliding departments or removable pieces
Advanced Puzzles: multi-step tasks or toys that require lifting/pawing
Why this works-- a dog's nose sniff rate is 150 breaths per minute. (BPM) But while running around, it's just 90 BPM!!! That means their nose is working OVERTIME is a great way!! Use sniffing to your advantage,
Also, remember to rotate your puzzles weekly to prevent boredom!
Instead of using traditional feeding bowls, use feeding time as a brain workout:
Slow feeders
Lick mats
Treat dispensers
Frozen treats
These options add enrichment and bring out your Australian Shepherd's natural foraging behaviors.
Hide-and-Seek- a fun way to provide Australian Shepherd mental stimulation
Playing hide-and-seek with you or their toys taps into the Aussie's tracking and herding desires.
How to Play:
Have your dog sit and stay, then hide somewhere in the house. Call your Aussie once and listen for them to come. Celebrate with lots of praise or a treat when they find you! This game will help you build recall skills and confidence.
Nose Work & Scent Games
Remember that BPM rate we mentioned above? Well, here are a few more ideas to kick that Aussie brain into high gear!!! Aussies excel at scent games, even though they're not traditionally considered scent hounds. Nose work engages deep mental focus and can help tired, anxious, or high-energy dogs settle more easily.
Try:
Backyard Sniffari: Scatter treats or kibble around your backyard and search.
Find-It Game: Scatter treats or kibble and say "find it!" or roll treats up inside a towel.
Scatter Kibble Activity: Scatter kibble or treats around your furniture. Hide a few high-value treats under & behind things for a super fun scavenger hunt.
Where is it? Game: Hide your dog's favorite treats under a cup. Say "where is it?" then wait for them to sniff it out. When they find the right cup, lift it so they can eat their reward!
Muffin Tin Game: Hide treats or kibble inside a muffin tin under a few tennis balls.
These games are fantastic for cold or rainy days when outside physical activities are limited.
Australian Shepherd Training at Home
Trick Training Sessions
A brag moment!!! Check out Sky learning tricks with her favorite humans! Living full-time in an RV while traveling the country for retirement means living in small living quarters. But that doesn't have to be a bad thing. Mini Australian Shepherds LOVE learning new tricks and showing them off - and let's be honest, so do we!
Fun Tricks to Teach:
Spin
Back up
Bow
Weave between your legs
Pick up toys and put them away
Shut doors or cabinets
Keep sessions to 5-10 minutes to prevent frustration and maintain enthusiasm - for you and the pup!
DIY Obstacle Courses
Obstacle courses are another way to combine physical activity with strategic thinking. Use household items to design a simple indoor agility course:
Towels for weaving
Chairs and brooms for jumping
Cushions for balancing
Laundry baskets for tunnels
Final Thoughts
Keeping your Australian Shepherd sharp and happy helps not only build a stronger connection between the two of you, it also enriches your pup's life. Whether you use puzzle toys, scent work, trick training, or at-home obstacle courses, your Aussie will thank you with better behavior, sharper focus, and plenty of happy wiggles!
