Mini Aussie Colors Explained: A Simple Guide for Families

Mini Aussies come in some of the most beautiful colors in the dog world — but what do all those color names actually mean?

If you have ever heard words like blue merle, red tri, black tri, copper points, bi-color, or blue-eyed tri and thought, “Okay… but what does that actually look like?” — you are not alone.

Mini Aussies are known for their eye-catching coats, but the good news is this: the colors are much easier to understand than they sound.

Let’s break it down simply.

What Colors Do Mini Aussies Come In?

Mini Aussies, officially known as Miniature American Shepherds, come in four main color families:

  • Black

  • Blue merle (dog speak for grey and black)

  • Red (dog speak for brown)

  • Red merle (dog speak for khaki and brown)

From there, each dog may also have:

  • White markings

  • Copper/tan points

  • Blue eyes, brown eyes, amber eyes, or mixed eyes

That is why two puppies can both be “blue merle” and still look completely different.

1. Blue Merle Mini Aussie

A blue merle Mini Aussie has a coat with gray, silver, black, and sometimes white or copper mixed together.

The merle pattern creates a marbled or patchy look, which is why no two blue merles look exactly alike.

Blue merles may have:

  • Blue eyes

  • Brown eyes

  • One blue eye and one brown eye

  • Marbled or speckled eyes

  • White collars or blazes

  • Copper points on the face, legs, and chest

Blue merles are often one of the most recognized Mini Aussie colors because they are so flashy.

2. Red Merle Mini Aussie

One of the most common questions people ask me is about red Aussies- Mini Aussie colors explained are like a Cracker Jack box! Full of surprises and maybe chocolate too!! Reds are just brown like chocolate. A red merle Mini Aussie has a marbled coat too, but instead of black and gray tones, the coloring is usually red, liver, cream, and lighter coppery shades.

Red merles can look soft, warm, and beautifully unique.

Red merles may have:

  • Blue eyes

  • Amber eyes

  • Greenish or hazel tones as puppies

  • Brown eyes

  • White markings

  • Copper points

Just like blue merles, every red merle has a one-of-a-kind pattern.

3. Black Tri Mini Aussie

A black tri Mini Aussie has three colors:

  • Black

  • White

  • Copper/tan

This is one of the classic Aussie looks. A black tri may have a black body, white chest, white blaze, and copper eyebrows, cheeks, and legs.

And yes — those little copper eyebrows are basically built-in facial expressions. Very helpful for looking innocent after making questionable life choices.

Black Tri puppies can have brown or blue eyes.

4. Red Tri Mini Aussie

A red tri Mini Aussie is similar to a black tri, but the base color is red instead of black.

Red can range from a lighter cinnamon color to a deep chocolate/liver color.

A red tri usually has:

  • Red/liver coat color

  • White markings

  • Copper/tan points

  • Amber, greenish, or brown eyes

Red tris are often warm, rich, and very striking in person. ( my personal fav here at SSH)

Mini Aussie colors explained, What Does “Bi” Mean?

You may also hear the term bi-color or bi.

This simply means the dog has two main colors instead of three. It does NOT have copper/tan points. Just white alongside its primary coat color.

What Are Copper Points?

Copper points are the tan or rust-colored markings you often see on:

  • Eyebrows

  • Cheeks

  • Legs

  • Chest

  • Under the tail

Copper can be light and creamy (like a fawn) or deeper rust-colored (like an old penny).

Not every Mini Aussie has copper, and that is totally normal. Some have bold copper points, while others have very little.

Can Mini Aussies Have Blue Eyes?

Yes, Mini Aussies can have blue eyes.

They can also have:

  • Brown eyes

  • Amber eyes

  • Hazel eyes

  • One blue eye and one brown eye

  • Eyes with flecks or marbling

Eye color does not determine temperament. A blue-eyed puppy is not automatically calmer, smarter, wilder, or more “special” in personality than a brown-eyed puppy.

Pretty? Absolutely.

A personality guarantee? Nope.

At SSH, we care far more about temperament, structure, health, and the right family match than simply choosing a puppy by eye color.

Does Coat Color Affect Personality?

No — coat color does not tell you whether a puppy will be calm, confident, playful, snuggly, bold, or sensitive.

A puppy’s personality comes from things like:

  • Genetics (we are more like our parents than we'd like to think)

  • Temperament

  • Early handling

  • Socialization

  • Training

  • Environment

  • The match between puppy and family

This is why we do not recommend choosing your puppy by color alone.

A beautiful coat is fun.

A puppy who fits your family, lifestyle, and goals? That matters even more.

Our Approach at Sunset Hill Aussies

At Sunset Hill Mini & Toy Aussies, we love all the beautiful colors this breed offers.

But color is only one small part of the whole puppy.

When we help families choose a puppy, we look at:

  • Temperament

  • Confidence level

  • Energy level

  • People-focus

  • Trainability

  • Family lifestyle

  • Health testing

  • Long-term fit

We want you to love how your puppy looks, of course. But more importantly, we want you to love living with your dog.

Because the prettiest puppy in the world still needs to be the right puppy for your home.

Mini Aussie Colors: Simple Summary

Here is the easy version:

  • Blue merle: gray/black marbled coat

  • Red merle: red/liver marbled coat

  • Black tri: black, white, and copper

  • Red tri: red/liver, white, and copper

  • Bi-color: two colors, usually without copper

  • Copper points: tan/rust markings on the face, legs, chest, or underside

  • Blue eyes: possible, but not a personality predictor

Mini Aussies are beautifully unique, but color should never be the only thing families consider.

The best puppy is the one whose temperament fits your life.
