Australian Shepherds are known for many things - boundless energy, sharp intelligence, a heart that beats for adventure, and so much more! But behind every thriving Aussie is something just as important as training, exercise, and love: proper nutrition. What an Aussie eats daily directly impacts their performance, behavior, growth, and overall long-term health.

At Sunset Hills, we understand that there are so many choices out there - so how do you choose? It took us over a year of research on dog food and supplements to create what we believe is the best and simplest way to properly take care of your Australian Shepherd. We didn't want to be wrong because our mommas and their brilliant puppies were at stake.

We created a guide to better help you understand the importance of proper nutrition and items we believe work well!

🐾Nutrition Matters For Australian Shepherds

Aussies are not your average "walk around the block and nap all day" type of dogs. Just "any old" dog food isn't best nutrition for Aussies. They're athletes at heart - always thinking, moving, and ready for a new adventure.

Because of this, their bodies and mind need:

  • High-quality protein

  • Healthy fats

  • Balanced carbs

  • Vitamins & minerals

  • Proper hydration

When these needs are meant, you will see the results - shiny coats, bright eyes, healthy stools, steady energy, and a Aussie who is both mentally and physically strong.

🐾Choosing the Best Nutrition for Aussies

High-Protein Formulas

Aussies thrive on protein-rich diets. Aim for:

  • Real meat as the first ingredient

  • 22-32% protein for adult dogs (depends on activity level - more protein needed for working/sport Aussies)

Healthy Fats

Fat is a powerhouse energy source for active dogs - this also nourishes the skin and creates a beautiful coat. Good sources are:

  • Salmon or fish oil

  • Chicken fat

  • Flaxseed

  • Eggs

Support Joints Early

Aussies are agile athletes which means joint-supporting nutrients will make all the difference! Beneficial ingredients include:

  • Glucosamine, Chondroitin, and Omega-3 fatty acids

Avoid Fillers & Excessive Carbs

Too many fillers will lead to weight gain and/or erratic energy spikes. Australian Shepherds benefit from balanced, digestible carbs, such as, sweet potatoes, oats, or rice.

Aussie Puppies

Puppies need extra support for their rapid growth and mental development.

At SSH Aussies, we use a 50/50 blend of:

We blend the two in case there is ever a supply issue with one then puppies are already used to both and avoid digestive issues.

Adult Aussies

As adults, it is important to maintain a steady routine tailored to their activity level.

At SSH Aussies, we use a 50/50 blend of:

We blend the two so it's a balanced nutrition and if there ever was a supply issue, the dogs are already used to both.

We recommend these options (for both puppy and adult Aussies) because they contain natural ingredients without corn or soy products, as well as no junk! We appreciate Open Farm's transparency in disclosing the origin of each ingredient - such as apples that are sourced in Michigan!

🐾Daily Vitamin Support

At SSH Aussies, we recommend:

These are sprinkled on our Australian Shepherd's food daily. Both puppies and adults take them daily and love them!

Our older dogs, as well as agility dogs, use their joint supplements.

These options help support training goals while supporting healthy weight.

🐾Signs Your Aussie is Getting the Right Fuel

The best signs of a healthy Aussie are:

  • Steady, balanced energy (not erratic spikes)

  • Full, shiny coat

  • Clear eyes

  • Solid & consistent stools

  • Healthy weight

  • Enthusiasm for meals

  • Smooth muscle tones

If anything seems off - itching, gassiness, dull coat, low energy - it may be time to adjust their diet!
