Your Mini Aussie's Fall Bucket List 🍂
Fall is one of the very best seasons to provide your Mini & Toy Aussie Mental Stimulation
The weather is cooler. The world smells different. Leaves crunch under their paws. Pumpkin patches pop up everywhere. Even a simple walk becomes a brand-new adventure.
Here's the best part…
Enrichment doesn't have to be expensive.
Some of the best ways to exercise your Aussie's brain cost little to nothing. New smells, textures, sights, and sounds challenge their mind far more than another game of fetch around the backyard.
This fall, challenge yourself to complete this bucket list with your dog. Try one or two each week and enjoy making memories together.
1. Take a Crunchy Leaf Walk
Instead of rushing through your daily walk, slow down. Rake a pile of leaves for them. Find a leafy backyard or park. Don't overachieve here; just find something easy and fun.
Let your dog:
Sniff the piles of leaves
Listen to the crunch beneath their paws
Explore at their own pace
Sometimes the best enrichment is simply allowing them time to investigate.

2. Visit a Pumpkin Patch
Many pumpkin patches welcome dogs.
It's the perfect opportunity to introduce:
New people
Wagons and wheelbarrows
Hay bales
Pumpkins of every shape and size
Different smells and sounds
Practice calm greetings and reward your puppy for checking in with you.

3. Nature Treasures Search & Find
Bring home a few pieces of fall. Pinecones, mini gourds, leaves.
Grab your muffin tin, stash a Pumpkin Spice Dog Treat (recipe on # 11) in each muffin spot. Then "top" or cover with your nature's goodies!
Let your puppy safely investigate each new texture and smell, topple them over and find the treat!!
(Skip acorns, as they can be harmful if chewed or swallowed.)
4. Hide Treats in a Leaf Pile
Low effort- high reward!! YAY! Zero brain cells required!
Gather a small pile of leaves and sprinkle a handful of treats throughout.
Now let your dog's nose do the work.
This simple sniffing game provides incredible mental stimulation while encouraging natural foraging behavior.
Always check the leaves first to make sure there aren't any sharp sticks or hidden hazards.

5. Explore a New Nature Trail
You don't need a long hike.
Even a 20-minute walk somewhere new introduces hundreds of fresh scents.

I love using AllTrails to discover dog-friendly nature trails, hiking spots, or parks near home or while traveling.
Simply search your area and filter for dog-friendly trails.
6. Visit a Farm Market or Garden Center
Fall markets are full of enrichment opportunities.
Your puppy gets exposure to:
Shopping carts
Seasonal decorations
New flooring
Friendly people
Outdoor displays
Different smells
Perfect real-world socialization.
Lowes, Home Depot, Rural King, Tractor Supply ALL allow pets. Plus many have outdoor fall displays for pumpkin shopping- perfect for your pooch to investigate!

7. Walk Across Nature's Playground
Instead of staying on the path, safely explore what's around it.
Practice walking over:
Fallen logs
Tree stumps
Large rocks
Small hills
These natural obstacles build confidence, coordination, and body awareness.
8. Build a DIY Fall Obstacle Course w Pumpkin Spice dog treats*
*Recipe below on # 11
Use what nature already provides, and hide some homemade goodies along the way!!
Ideas include:
Hay bales
Buckets
Small logs
Pumpkins
Garden stakes
Sticks on the ground
Halloween decor
Oversized straw hat/sun hat
Scarecrows (dollar stores have cheap ones for this)
Amazon boxes (ok not Fall, but we all have them so why not use them)
Hide treats all around your course! Encourage your dog to walk around, over, under, and between obstacles.
No fancy equipment required.
9. Have an Autumn Sound Session
Grab your PSL, oversized flannel, and your dog, then head outside!
Sometimes enrichment means doing...
Nothing.
Find a quiet place and simply sit together.
Listen for:
Wind through the trees
Geese flying overhead
Squirrels
Tractors
Rustling leaves
Reward calm observation.
Your Aussie doesn't always need activity.
Sometimes they simply need to learn how to exist peacefully in the world around them.
10. Visit a New Town
Drive somewhere you've never walked before.
A different neighborhood, downtown area, or local park gives your dog hundreds of new smells to process.
Even one block can provide enough novelty to make the trip worthwhile.

11. Bake Homemade Pumpkin Treats Together
Fall is the perfect excuse to head into the kitchen with your Aussie "helping" nearby.
Making homemade treats is enrichment all by itself. Your dog experiences new smells, practices patience while you bake, and gets rewarded at the end.
If you're looking for an easy recipe, the American Kennel Club has a PUMPKIN DOG TREATS RECIPE
Quick safety tip: Use 100% pure pumpkin purée, not pumpkin pie filling. Also be sure your peanut butter is xylitol-free, as xylitol is highly toxic to dogs. I use all-natural PB with 2 ingredients: peanuts & salt.
Get some moody music going while you bake

12. Carve a Pumpkin Together
Who says pumpkin carving is just for the humans?
Invite your Aussie to join the fun.
Start by letting them:
Sniff the pumpkin
Watch you carve
Explore the different textures
Experience a brand-new smell
Then turn it into an enrichment game.
Try:
Hiding treats inside the hollow pumpkin for a fun sniffing challenge
Tossing a favorite toy inside for an easy retrieval game
Teaching your dog to gently remove the pumpkin lid by holding the stem (if they already enjoy picking up objects)
Practicing "wait," "leave it," or "find it" around the pumpkin
Enrichment doesn't always mean buying another toy.
Sometimes it's simply inviting your dog into what you're already doing.
13. Explore New Walking Surfaces
Challenge your puppy to experience different textures.
This week, try walking across:
Wet grass
Mulch
Gravel
Wooden bridges
Wooden decks
Dirt trails
Boardwalks
Flat rocks
Every new texture teaches your dog that the world is safe to explore.
14. Visit an Outdoor Fall Festival
OHIO Peeps- check this link: Fall Festivals around Ohio
MICHIGAN families - check this link: Fall Festivals around MI
KENTUCKY locals- check this link: Fall Festivals around KY
INDIANA people- check this link: Fall Festivals around IN
Choose a quieter time of day and simply people-watch together.
Remember...
The goal isn't excitement.
The goal is teaching your puppy to calmly experience the world.
Bring treats and reward:
Calm attention
Eye contact
Relaxed body language
Checking in with you
15. End Every Adventure with a Calm Reset
This may be the most important item on the entire list. The older I get, the more I appreciate this. Seriously, worth it.
Use this: SSH Fall Days 🍂 with your Aussie
After every adventure, help your dog's nervous system come back down.
Ideas include:
Relaxing on the porch together
A chew while lying on a blanket
Scattering dinner in the grass
A quiet sniff around the backyard
A peaceful cuddle before heading inside
Make a fall playlist on your phone to chill to- try
This teaches your Aussie an incredibly valuable life skill:
Adventure... then relaxation.
Your Aussie doesn't need constant excitement.
They need meaningful experiences followed by calm recovery.
That's where emotional regulation grows.
Why Enrichment Matters More Than Endless Exercise
One of the biggest myths about Aussies is that they simply need more exercise.
While they certainly enjoy being active, many "hyper" Aussies aren't lacking physical exercise—they're lacking purposeful enrichment.
Their brains crave:
New smells
New textures
New sounds
New places
New challenges
New experiences
A 20-minute sniff walk or a calm visit to a pumpkin patch often provides more mental fulfillment than another hour of repetitive fetch.
Remember...
Your Aussie doesn't need a cheerleader.
They need a CALMleader.
By giving your dog thoughtful experiences—and helping them settle afterward—you build confidence, resilience, and the ability to regulate their own emotions.
Those are the dogs who can enjoy adventures and relax at home afterward.
And that's exactly what we're aiming for.
🎵 The SSH Fall Playlist
Every season has a soundtrack.
Ours is slow mornings, crunchy leaves, wagging tails, and coffee on the porch.
We created a playlist full of cozy jazz, mellow piano, and timeless classics to play while you explore this fall bucket list with your Aussie.
Whether you're heading to a pumpkin patch, taking a sniff walk through the woods, or simply enjoying the sunset together, we hope it becomes part of your family's autumn tradition.
