There's something special about life on the open road - windows down, new places ahead, and your Mini or Toy Australian Shepherd riding shotgun. At SSH Aussies, we know your pup isn't just a dog, they are your family and for many of our SSH families that includes an RV and a whole lot of adventure! RV Life and SSH Aussies? That's a perfect match!

Mini and Toy Aussies make incredible travel companions - so why not take a trip of a lifetime with your best friend!

Why Mini & Toy Australian Shepherds Rock RV Travel Life

Let's start with the obvious - their size! Mini and Toy Aussies fit and still move around comfortably in the RV. But these Aussies still bring their big-dog energy and personality - keeping up with hikes, campground exploring, and long travel days.

Size isn't the only positive - Aussies also thrive on togetherness. Similar to them always following you to the bathroom or right at your heels, Australian Shepherds take the name velcro dogs very seriously. For them, the best destination is wherever you are!

Mini and toy Australian Shepherds are so easy to train it makes them PERFECT for traveling in an RV, long road trips, and exploring National Parks.

Turning Your RV Into "Aussie Headquarters"

Even though RV travel life can be flexible and adventurous, Aussies still appreciate familiarity, as well as routine. Setting up a space inside your RV can make all the difference - we are aiming for familiarity not necessarily luxury (unless that is what your Aussie prefers!).

Must-haves:

  • Their bed or crate

  • Favorite toys, chew bones, and treats

  • One blanket that smells like home

These small comforts can help your Aussie settle in quickly, especially during long trips or overnight stops! Once they know where their spot is, they will be a pro road traveler in no time.

Safety First (Always!)

Traveling safely with your SSH Aussie is a must! We recommend:

  • A secure harness or crate while driving

  • Updated ID tags and microchip information

  • A reliable leash (Aussies are curious and fast!)

  • Keep the RV climate-controlled if your pup stays inside - mini and toy Aussies are sensitive to heat, so never leave them unattended without proper temperature control.

    • SSH Aussie Families have purchased a Dog Monitoring System (such as Waggle) to help keep an eye on their pup.

The Added Benefits Of RV Life With Your Mini or Toy Aussie

Exercise & Mental Stimulation on the Road

Let's be honest - SSH Aussies don't do "couch potato" very well.😉 These toy and mini Australian Shepherds are smart and if that brain isn't engaged, they'll invent a job you didn't ask for. Even while traveling in your RV, they need daily outlets for their energy and brainpower.

Easy Inside RV Ideas:

  • Puzzle toys & treat challenges

  • Fun training games - perfect time to learn new tricks and refresh old ones

  • Pair up rainy days and one new trick for the perfect solution to bad weather in an RV

  • Sniff Games- teaching your pup to "find it" is the ultimate hide-and-seek for dogs in RV travel

  • Calm bonding time - brushing/paw spa, doggie massages, and rewarding calm behavior

  • Continuous toy rotation. Keep toys hidden away, and give outjust one or two at a time to keep them "fresh" and fun!

When RV traveling, our SSH Aussie families have shared that having a long walk or a good play session before starting your trip will make all the difference. And always remember to stop at least every 2 hours to stretch their legs, burn some energy, and take a potty break.

Easy Outside RV Ideas:

  • Sniffari Walks - let your Aussie explore different smells and different surfaces

  • "Aussie jobs" around the campsite - even pretend jobs satisfy that working-dog brain

  • Fetch (with boundaries)

  • Micro training session in nature - great time to practice in different environments! Can your Aussie listen with different smells and sounds all around them?

  • DIY camp agility courses - logs to step over, picnic benches for "up" and "off", and even rocks or stumps for balance work

  • Leashed social exposure (without pressure)

  • Settle time while you relax - remember to provide a reward when your toy or mini Aussie demonstrates calm behavior.

Social Stimulation for your Social Butterfly

Aussies tend to love people and often think every person is there just to admire them. You may even find long-term human friendships from your social pup! RV life can be a great way to continue socialization (for you and your Aussie)- just be mindful of overstimulation. Not every dog or person needs a greeting, and it is okay to advocate for your pup's space.

Teaching good leash skills, reinforcing a "reward zone" at your side, and polite greeting skills are helpful for loving every minute on the road or at a National Park. Learning to just "keep walking" past a person on a trail, or "sitting" when greeting, makes your trail adventures stress-free.
